Pathways to Health: Bristol
Knowle West Health Park, Bristol
Our Company was set up to tackle health inequalities, which put simply means to develop services and new ways of helping people in areas like Knowle West to become more healthy, to lengthen their life expectancy and to access the health care services they need. A successful health park will help to bring about the improvement of health in this area, and as anyone who knows me will understand, I am keen advocate for Knowle West, and I think this is a real priority.
We want to make our services accessible and responsive to all, younger and older people, men and women, those with disabilities, life limiting illness and any special or as yet unknown needs. The Health Park should be seen as a community resource, and we are keen that all members of our community feel that they can access services here. If you know of services that are needed but currently aren’t provided, we as a Company would be keen to know what they are and then try to organise something in response, and in partnership with the local community.
Our Well-being project will work with different age ranges, with a holistic approach to improving health and wellbeing within whole families.
Targeting 1350 children and adults, our scheme addresses health issues around diet, sleep, stress, smoking, alcohol, physical activity and ability to cope. Issues explored in 1- to - 1 and group sessions helping people to consider their lifestyle, identify changes they need to make and providing a ‘small step approach’ to encourage change.
Activities will address poor mental health, improve physical health and encourage healthy eating amongst children and adults.
What is it?
The Health worker approach will support people and families to bring about positive changes, through:
- Working on a one to one basis to encourage people to pursue a healthy lifestyle through a supported programme of activities
- Encouraging people with the most sedentary lifestyles to increase their activity levels and encourage individuals to incorporate more activity into their daily lives
- Improving knowledge about projects that provide opportunities for local people to become more active and supporting people who are overweight to increase their physical activity and providing specialist support around obesity and weight management.
